Fragrance Oils
Fragrance oils are essential in the production of perfume. There are many names for it and they include, aroma oils, aromatic oils, or flavor oils. They are created from either synthetic aromas or essential oils with propylene glycol, vegetable oil, or mineral oil. More expensive perfumes use aroma oils made from essential oils. These are oils pulled from a plant or herb. The roots, leaves, petals, stems, or seeds may be used in the process. Less expensive perfumes use fragrance oils made from synthetic aromas that are created from less expensive essential oils and chemical compounds. This type of aroma oils would include many of the musk scents used in perfumes since musk originally comes from animals, many of which are on endangered species lists. There are several ways to create fragrance oils. One way is distillation. This is the process of placing plant parts in water and heating over high heat. This is a long process that reaps very small rewards. The scents that are collected through condensation are made into essential oils and used in the creation of the aroma oils. The process of squeezing or compressing materials is called expression. It is used mainly in fruit scents. However, like distillation, this process requires a lot of raw material and can take a long time to get the desired quantity of scent needed to make a flavor oil. The process of enfleurage is not longer used very often in the creation of aroma oils. It has been replaced by expression and solvent extraction due to the costs associated wit the process. The last process of obtaining scents for aroma oils is the most widely used process in the perfume industry. It is solvent extraction. It is relatively fast, taking from several hours to several months depending on the materials, and reaps a higher quantity of scent in less time. It is less expensive than distillation and many types of materials can be used in the process. The other part of fragrance oils that is important to the perfume industry is the concentration of scent in the fragrance oil. The higher the concentration the longer the scent will last or the stronger the scent will be when worn. The fragrance oil concentration will also be defined by the type of perfume, whether it is perfume, eau de toilette, cologne, or another form, including lotions, shower gels, or powders. There are no real standards for the concentration with each perfume designer setting his or her own limits. Knowing about fragrance oils, the process of creating them and how they are used can help you decide the types of perfumes and fragrances that are appealing to you. Knowing about the concentration of aroma oils will help you understand why some perfumes are strong and others are not. Fragrance oils are the most important part of the perfume industry, and knowledge is the key to finding the perfect perfumes.
