Chanel No 5 is probably the most famous perfume ever made and is also the top most selling perfume in the world.
Ernest Beaux created this mythical perfume in 1921, at the behest of Coco Chanel. Coco was introduced to this designer by her then Russian beau, Grand Duke Dmitri. Ernest Beaux actually made more than 20 fragrances for her and it was the fifth one that Coco liked immensely; hence the name Chanel No 5.
Coco Chanel famously said that since all the perfumes back then were floral and pretty she wanted something radically different. To complement the already beautiful woman, she wanted a totally unusual scent. And hence she went in for aldehydes as the top note in her perfume.
